From my undergraduate time at Pepperdine University and my master’s program in Medical Science at BU to my years in medical school at Loma Linda University, my educational path was blessed with a dual focus on the personal side of health, not just the textbook. This patient-first approach gave me the framework to better humanize the pain that we go through when we navigate a health emergency. That layer of community and family service benefited my patients in the way I apply the best tools we have in medicine.
Refining Patient Care in
Emergency Medicine
The years I spent leading patient care in the emergency departments of some of the country’s most demanding of trauma centers shaped my view of the system. Over this time, I found that the US has the highest of standards across emergency medicine. There is no other place on earth you want to be when you are in a car accident, get an infection, discover a brain tumor or suffer a crippling injury.

Where I saw the opportunity to improve patient lives and disease outcomes was on the prevention side of this equation. What can our system do to prevent that ER visit from happening in the first place? Turns out… a whole lot. A large majority of health emergencies are associated with chronic conditions. Functional medicine is the best tool to prevent them.

My Favorite Health Hacks

I have held surfing as the single most regenerative and restorative health hack I have in my arsenal. I try to help everyone find a healthy activity they can have as much fun doing as I do surfing. The fresh air, the sunlight, the connection to mother nature and the environment… and the 3+ hours of exercise that goes by in flash.
If you would have asked me 10 years ago if I was going to love yoga, I would have laughed at you. But there is something really special about an activity that marries physical exertion, mindfulness, breathing exercise and meditation all into a single hour. Now, it is a critical part of managing my mental & physical health.
Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. Cooking brings me and my family together and allows us to integrate all the nutrients we need to live optimal lives. Proper nutrition repairs and supports a healthy gut, brain, heart and immune system. I enjoy a good cheat day, but it doesn’t beat the feeling of a high quality, home cooked meal.
When the waves are flat, you can always rely on the mountains to be there. I like to spend a lot of time exploring the Santa Ynez and Santa Monica Mountains. Maintaining functional strength through zone 2 cardio like this is a great way to ensure you never lose your edge as you age.
